What is the Grid football game?

Grid is a free football knowledge puzzle on ExtraTime. You see a board (3×3, 4×4, or 5×4) where every cell has criteria such as nationality, club history, league, or tournament achievement. Footballers appear one at a time — place each into a cell whose criteria they satisfy, or skip distractors that don't belong. Fill the entire grid to earn a completion bonus on top of your per-placement points, and string together correct answers to earn ExtraTime Hits.

How do I play the Grid football game?

After picking a grid size and optional themed variation, study the criteria on each cell. When a footballer appears, click the cell that matches. You have 12 seconds per footballer. Wrong guesses trigger a penalty skip, so be careful. If you're stuck, use your ExtraTime helper to auto-place or auto-skip. The game ends when every footballer has been shown or every cell is filled.

How does scoring work in Grid?

You earn 1 point for every correctly placed footballer. If you fill every cell on the board, you receive a completion bonus: +5 for 3×3, +10 for 4×4, or +15 for 5×4. Wrong guesses cost 0 points but trigger a penalty — the next footballer is automatically skipped, costing you a chance to score.

What grid sizes are available in Grid?

Grid offers three board sizes: 3×3 (9 cells, +5 completion bonus), 4×4 (16 cells, +10 completion bonus), and 5×4 (20 cells, +15 completion bonus). Larger grids include more footballers and more distractors, making them significantly harder. Create a free ExtraTime account to unlock 4×4 and 5×4.

What does ExtraTime do in Grid?

ExtraTime (ET) is a helper move. When activated it checks whether the current footballer fits any unfilled cell — if so, the footballer is auto-placed and you earn the point; if not, the footballer is skipped for free with no penalty. You start with one ExtraTime, and earn bonus ExtraTime Hits by chaining consecutive correct answers (3 in a row on 3×3, 4 on 4×4, 5 on 5×4). A single wrong guess resets the streak counter.

What are distractors in Grid?

About 25–35 % of the footballer pool are distractors — players who don't match any cell on the board. You need to recognize them and hit Skip. Placing a distractor into a cell counts as a wrong guess and triggers the penalty system.

What are Grid variations?

Variations are themed presets that filter the footballer pool and criteria. For example, a 'World Cup' variation only uses World Cup–related criteria and players. You can select a variation before starting or play the default unrestricted mode.

Is Grid free to play?

Yes, Grid is completely free. Anyone can play 3×3 grids without an account. Sign up for a free ExtraTime account to unlock larger 4×4 and 5×4 boards, track your scores, and build personal Grid stats.

Can I review my Grid game after it ends?

Yes. After every Grid game, open the post-game Replay to watch a step-by-step playback of your run on two side-by-side boards — your path and the perfect solution. Adjust the speed, jump to any footballer, and read learning cards that explain where you could have placed each player, when skipping was correct, and where ExtraTime helped. The perfect solution is revealed only after your session finishes so it never spoils live play.
